Okay I was hesitant to post since I don't like to display my complete ignorance, and I know how upset posters can get when someone posts on subjects previously covered, but I don't see anything that quites covers it.

What is RSS? What do I do? What program do I use?

I have looked for an explanation but not found anything useful, just more confusing. I can look at the RSS through the link on my Wordpress blog, but it's just useless code to me. What do I do with it? How the hell does that help me? And how does others' RSS help me?

Bloody confusing...

Well as your readership grows some of your readers wont have time to surf to your site everyday, but instead they will use a program that will fetch and display your posts. That is basically RSS in a nutshell. You dont need to worry about it, it sounds like you have it automatically, maybe just make sure it is advertised.

As you get more and more into blogging your reading scope will increase and then you will want to try RSS to keep abreat with everything. Many different types but I find bloglines the best. Opinions vary of course.

Okay?

RSS makes whatever you post in a simple format that your reader can display however they want. they can add it to outlook and view your news items as emails.. or add them to a feed parser and display them on your website.. the possibilities are endless, the best thing about it is that you get more exposure, but they could potentially be scraping your site for data and using it for their own uses.

RSS is a standard format for syndicating content on the Internet. The content can be anything! Often information contained in an RSS feed is syndicated on other sites which expands its reach.

Website visitors love RSS because they choose which feeds they wish to subscribe to, if at any point they are unhapy with the content contained in the RSS feed they simply unsubscribe and no longer receive notification of feed updates.

RSS is really a win, win for both subscribers and publishers.

In order to get a better understanding of how RSS works download an RSS reader or use a web aggregator and subscribe to an RSS feed (they are usually indicated by a small orange icon).
